After one week of relaxing and pretty much doing nothing but getting over a nasty cold my friend Volker and myself left on our trip to the coast on Tuesday. At around 3:00 pm we were finally packed and ready to go. Unfortunately it took us over 2 hours just to get out of Sao Paolo. We were stuck in traffic really bad, almost had an accident with one of the motor cycle riders when we switched lanes. The always speed in between cars and somehow we did not see him. We heard him break really hard and suddenly about 10 motorcycles surrounded our car threatening us .... interesting. Oh well, suddenly the traffic got much better and we were almost on our own. The drive through the mountains was very pretty. Unfortunately due to the delay it was almost dark when we reached the most interesting part. The descend from the mountains down to the Atlantic must be spectacular during daylight. Soon thereafter we reached the ferry to the island and 30 minutes later we arrived at our hotel ´Hotel Mercedes´. A lot of money was spent to create this unique hotel. It is built into the rocky hillside, has its own beach and heliport. At some point they must have run out of money since it is not yet finished. Unfortunately our restaurant of choice was closed. Instead we went to a Pizza place that was recommended, the food was excellent and we had a great Chilean Cab to go with it. Yummy.

The breakfast at the hotel was really good. Fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, rolls, ham and cheese, French Toast and much more. Unfortunately Volker was not feeling well, it seemed I had passed on my bad cold to him. For this reason and also because the weather was really bad (cold and rainy) we decided to skip the Jeep tour and explore the islands by ourselves. We drove along the coast a beautiful drive along a windy road that at some point merged into a dirt road. There was lots of construction everywhere, many beautiful little coves and beaches .... if just the weather would be a little nicer ......bbbbbbrrrrrrr.
Our hotel in Ilhabela .... think sunshine and blue skies and will get a whole new feel to it.

The coastline on the island. We drove along a small dirt road and saw many great little coves and beaches.

The island was only accessible by ferry.
