Argentina - Buenos Aires 09/30/2006

.... and again more apartments. Met with my potential landlord to look at a second apartment in the same building. It was not as nice, but I could definitely have this if the other one would fall through. I explored the neighborhood on my way to the meeting, walked through the park of Plaza San Martin and checked out the train station (Retiro) close by. It is a really nice neighborhood .... I like it very much. Very central and you can walk to many other good areas of the city. Afterwards I walked to Puerto Madero and went to the old harbor. The sun was shining, I walked along the waterfront .... very beautiful. Somehow it reminded me a lot of Hamburg. They converted the old storage buildings or warehouses into apartments, shops and lots of restaurants, bars and cafes. There is a lot of new construction going on as well, lots of new apartment high rises, but also some more old warehouses are being renovated.

There is also a casino on an old steamer, there was a market where you could buy a lot of things you never thought you would need, some items looked like they came straight from a burglary, others looked like "Sperrmuell". I sat down on a bench, enjoyed the sun and read in my book. Afterwards I went to a small cafe by the water to have "un sandwiche de atun naturel, un cafe con leiche and dos cervezas". I simply enjoyed the beautiful weather, watched the people walking by and read a little in ""Guns, Germs and Steel" .... or was it "Steel, Guns and Germs"? .... I never get this right.

Later I walked up Corrientes Avenue all the way to Callao and went to the cafe "Classica y Moderna". A very nice cafe, restaurant, book store and Jazz club all in one. They had live music that night, but I would have had to kill another 2 hours and did not want to have dinner there. So I left and plan to come back another time ...Instead I went to the restaurant "La Chacra" where I had a Filet Mignon in a pepper sauce with potato gratin. It was good, but compared to "Plaza Asturias" it did not justify the high price.
