Argentina - Impressions from Buenos Aires - Downtown and Puerto Madero

The Obelisk of Buenos Aires .... see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obelisk_of_Buenos_Aires for more info about the historical background.

The Presidential Palace, the president actually only works here, but does live in a different residence.

A view of Avenida. Alem ..... don't be fooled. This shot was taken on the weekend. During the week it is traffic hell.

Buenos Aires is full of great architecture .... love these corner buildings.

The congress of Argentina .... it was hard to take this shot. Could not move back further because of a construction fence behind me.

Cafe Tortoni .... one of the traditional cafes in Buenos Aires, beautiful.

Demonstrations .... it seems that Argentinean's like demonstrations ... they demonstrate for or against anything it seems, sometimes at the same time. In 10 days I have already experienced 6 large demonstrations, the last one on Thursday with a big pro and a large anti Military Junta demonstration happening at the same time. Argentina's history over the last 30 years had two military regimes which left many people dead or missing.

The "Big Ben" of Buenos Aires .... actually a gift from the Brit's.

Modern architecture as well ..... very cool design, but is it functional?

Puerto Madero, the old harbor. This shows the opposite side with lots of new apartment high rises being build. In front is the yacht harbor.

The converted warehouses in the harbor. Old brick buildings beautifully restored, full of shops and restaurants.

Just couldn't help it .... folks escape the busy city and their small apartments with no gardens or balconies to take a sun bath out in the green .... some how it has an East German feel to it ... dunno why I thought about that.

The yacht harbor, the old warehouses and the new office high rises .... a beautiful sky line.

You know that I have a weak spot for Kitsch photos .... Sunset with the Buenos Aires sky line from Puerto Madero.

"El Ateneo", a great book store and cafe in an old theatre.
