Argentina - Patagonia - Calafate / El Chalten

Horse back riding in Calafate. Well, I had to ask for a horse that can carry Hoss Cartwright (remember Bonanza and the Ponderosa?), you know, XXXL and so they gave me Marco. He does not seem very big, but is as strong as .... an elephant. He carried me with patience across the plains and up the hills of Patagonia, fighting heavy wind. We even so a Condor circling above us, checking us out, but I was so afraid to fall of my horse that I did not dare to take a photo. It has been over 20 years since I have been sitting on a horse and especially the down hill rides require a bit of skill. It was fun, but when Marco got a little wild in the end I was really happy to reach the farm house.

We went for a little walk in Calafate .... got lost and were suddenly in this random trash dump .... the sunset created an interesting atmosphere,

On the rode again .... I took the early morning bus from Calafate to El Chalten ..... In the back you see Mount Fitz Roy .... this shot depicts nicely that there can be this amazing "nothingness" in Patagonia and suddenly there are these amazing mountains in front of you.

More mountains .... I took this shot in front of the ranger station in El Chalten, I thought the green grass and yellow flowers created a nice counter point to the snow covered mountains in the back.

On advice of the ranger we (Torsten from Germany whom I met on the trail and myself) went immediately up to Cerro Torre, a beautiful mountain with a big glacier. This shot is taken from the end moraine of the glacier. The picture is a little misleading ... there was an ice cold wind howling down the glacier.

Kitsch as Kitsch can .... I just loved the sun reflection in this little lake - peaceful.
